Fiat 500 Hybrid All Keys Lost in Rotherham: New Key in 20 Minutes
A busy car supermarket in Rotherham called us with a problem every dealer dreads: the only key to a 2023 Fiat 500 Hybrid had gone missing in their workshop. There was no spare, so the car couldn't be moved, sold or handed over.
We came out, made a brand-new key on site and had the car running again in about 20 minutes. The Fiat dealer had quoted them double our price.
What happened
One of the garage's technicians had lost the key while the car was in for work. With no spare on file, the car was stuck on the forecourt, and a car you can't start is a car you can't sell.
Going back to the main dealer usually means:
- booking the car in and arranging to get it there, often on a trailer if there's no key at all
- waiting for a key to be ordered in
- paying main dealer prices
For a trade customer, every day a car sits unsold costs money.
How we made a new Fiat 500 key with no original
You don't need the old key to get a new one. Here's what we did on the day:
- Came to the customer. Everything we need is in the van, so the car didn't move an inch.
- Cut a new key blade to fit the car's locks and ignition.
- Programmed the new key to the car, so the immobiliser recognised it and the remote buttons worked.
- Removed the missing keys from the car's memory. At the customer's request, we programmed out every lost key, so if the old one ever turns up, it can't be used to start the car.
- Tested everything (start, lock, unlock) before we left.
Start to finish, the job took about 20 minutes.
The new Fiat flip key came from our sister company, Car Key Shop, which stocks replacement Fiat keys and remotes for most models.
Why programme out the lost keys?
When a key goes missing, you don't know where it's ended up. Removing it from the car's memory means a found (or stolen) key won't start the car. For a dealer, it gives peace of mind before the car goes to its new owner. We'd recommend it for private owners too.
